5 Ways to Keep Your Dog Safe by the Pool

As school lets out for break and backyard pools start becoming the best neighborhood hangout spots, it’s important to ensure your furry friend stays safe outside. If you aren’t paying attention or haven’t taken the proper precautions, your pup could get themselves into a dangerous situation.

Here are five ways to keep your dog safe by the pool this summer!

1) Keep Your Dog Supervised

Just like you would watch a young child near the water, you should always have an eye on your pet. Accidents can happen, so always keep an eye on your dog near the pool and let the whole family know that they must also pay attention to the whereabouts of your pup. A little supervision goes a long way in keeping your pet safe around pools.

2) Teach Your Dog to Swim

While all dogs know to paddle when submerged in water instinctively, that won’t always be enough to take them to safety. Inexperienced swimmers often concentrate on using their front legs, forgetting to start up the rear end. Getting in the pool with your dog and supporting their back end as they swim a short distance is a great way to prompt them to begin doing more with their back legs. The pool can be a great way for your dog to beat the summer heat if taught how to swim properly.

3) Invest in a Canine Life Jacket

Whether your pup is a novice or a pro at swimming, a life jacket will give you some peace of mind while they are in the pool or around it. Make sure to properly measure your dog’s chest, neck, and width for a proper fit!

4) Get a Pool Gate

If you have a puppy or an older dog that you simply do not want in or near the water, consider investing in a pet gate or a full-on fenced enclosure around your pool. This way, you won’t have to worry about your pup falling in if you are not around for thorough supervision.

5) Keep Your Pool Covered

Keeping your pool covered when it is not in use is always good practice. Above-ground pools may not be easy for a dog to jump or fall into, but in-ground pools can be a hidden danger. A distracted, impaired, or older dog can easily walk right in if they can’t see where the ground ends and the pool begins. It’s important to look out for the neighborhood dogs, children, and wildlife too. Covering your pool while not in use is a great way to prevent unnecessary accidents.
