How to Effectively Bond with Your Puppy

Bonding with new puppy

It can be a bit nerve-racking to bring home a new puppy for the first time. You want the new addition to your family to love and trust you right away, but this takes time. Putting in the effort to properly bond with your puppy can make for a smoother transition into pet ownership and reduce future behavioral issues from your dog.

Here are a few simple ways to effectively bond with your new puppy!

Show Them Around

Introduce your puppy to their collar and leash by leading them around their new home. Let them sniff and investigate indoors to familiarize them with the new surroundings they will be spending the most time in. Keeping them close to you during this process lets them know that you will be sharing their space with them and you are part of their pack.

Start Puppy Training

Puppy training is where you can learn how to communicate with your puppy through simple commands and hand signals and gain your puppy’s trust through quality time and positive rewards such as treats and toys! Owners teach their puppy the most important commands to know and overcome troublesome puppy behaviors and growing pains like potty training and chewing. Puppy training creates a foundation for your pup to grow into a well-mannered adult dog at home or in public.

Cozy Up with a Cuddle Session

Giving your puppy your time and affection just snuggled up on the couch can help grow that comforted and safe feeling they crave. The best time to do this is when they’re sleepy. You can encourage them to hang out with you by having a few pieces of their favorite treats in your hand to coax them to you and rewarding them with the treats once they settle beside you. As you continue to do this, you can slowly eliminate the food and provide them only with your affection.
