All About the Australian Labradoodle

The Australian Labradoodle is an amazingly smart breed of dog that was initiated from the careful breeding of a Labrador retriever and a Poodle. The first Australian Labradoodles were bred in Victoria, Australia, with the goal of producing a non-allergenic guide/therapy dog. The breeding was first done by Wally Conran of The Royal Guide Dogs in Victoria and was met with overwhelming success.

The process of breeding a Labradoodle begins with the initial breeding of a Lab to a Poodle. This initial breeding is referred to as “F1” in the breeding vernacular. Next, the offspring are bred back to a Poodle, in order to reinforce the Poodle genetics into the cross. This puppy from this second breeding is typically referred to as “F1b”. Subsequently, their offspring are bred F1b Labradoodle to F1b Labradoodle. After three generations of breeding, their offspring become Multi-Generation Labradoodles. The American Labradoodle is typically 1st generation or maybe 2nd generation and cannot guarantee allergy friendly and non-shedding results. Also, the American Labradoodle generally is not thoroughly Health Tested like the Australian Labradoodle before breeding. The Australian Labradoodle Association of America (ALAA) Members are required to have all Sires and Dams extensively Health Tested prior to breeding. The Multi-Generation Australian Labradoodle is not only Lab and Poodle but came from the old lines that infused the Curly Coated Retriever, Irish Water Spaniel and both the English and American Cocker Spaniel to get just the right traits that the Multi-Generation Australian Labradoodle is prized for today.

The Multi-Generation Australian Labradoodle is allergy friendly and typically does not shed like most other breeds. However, when they are brushed you will find hair in the brush like you do when you brush your own hair. At Blue Star we only offer Multi-Generation Australian Labradoodles. The remarkable qualities displayed by Multi-Generation Australian Labradoodles explain why they cost more than the 1st or 2nd Generation American Labradoodles. This is why people who want a true allergy-friendly, non-shedding dog, with the look of a true Multi-Generation Australian Labradoodle need to be sure that they are getting a Multi-Generation dog and not an early cross.

All the Blue Star Breeding Dogs enjoy being loving family companions but also have gotten top scores on their Health and Temperament Testing. Their Health Testing includes the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals Hips/Elbows to insure strong hips with NO hip dysplasia, tested to insure that they do not carry the gene for 11 different diseases, blood testing to insure healthy liver, kidney and thyroid function, no diabetes and their eyes are CERF Certified by an Ophthalmologist Vet to insure that there are no cataracts, glaucoma or any other eye diseases.

Testing starts when these precious puppies are 8 weeks old when they are evaluated for Temperament and Structure. When I plan to retain one of the puppies from the litter to carry on the wonderful traits of the Sire and Dam, we are looking for the Best of the Best “Breeding Quality”.

Multi-generation Australian Labradoodles have all of the desirable qualities you could possibly want in a loving family companion. They have beautiful, soft, wavy fleece, hypoallergenic coats and a strong, sturdy build. They’re easygoing, sociable, and always ready to play or snuggle. All of the characteristics that come to mind when you think of the quintessential dog can be used to describe this incredible breed.
