We brush our teeth at least twice a day to prevent cavities, tooth decay, and gum disease. The importance of regular dental cleanings for our dogs is just as severe! As pet owners, we usually don’t think about our dog’s oral health until we notice a problem.

Here are a few reasons dog dental care is important and why you should take preventative action before issues arise.

Prevent Bad Breath

If you notice your dog has had some very stinky breath, it could be due to bacteria buildup from poor dental care. Regularly cleaning your dog’s teeth can help prevent that odor from developing. Otherwise, the food particles that cling to their teeth and gums will form plaque.

Avoid Gingivitis

When tartar is left on your dog’s teeth, it can cause inflammation and gum infection. The gums may begin to recede from the teeth, leaving the teeth and gums more vulnerable. This can lead to gingivitis, which can cause your dog to lose their teeth. Gingivitis is the first phase of gum disease which can develop into a more dangerous periodontal disease.

Prevent Organ Damage

The bacteria that reside within plaque can enter the bloodstream. Once it travels through the body, bacteria can spread to the heart, liver, and kidneys. This process is called bacteremia. Bacteremia can cause organ damage and make your dog sick.

How to Clean Your Dog’s Teeth

Dental care for dogs includes annual professional dental cleanings done at a veterinarian’s office and regular at-home dental care.

  • Brush your dog’s teeth a few times a week using a safe dog dental toothpaste recommended by your veterinarian.
  • Give your dog dental treats, as not all dogs will cooperate while getting their teeth brushed.
  • Provide your dog with dental toys that are designed to clean their teeth and freshen their breath.

Dental disease is common in dogs, but proper dog dental care can keep their mouths as healthy as possible.
